Using Patterned Paper to layer your cards

Patterned Paper is one of the most versatile, and yet easy-to-use, tools in your crafting arsenal. It is inexpensive, stores nicely, and can be used on just about anything you put your mind to.

And it comes in SO many different varieties! I have made a personal hobby just of collecting as many beautiful sheets of paper as I can get my hands on. I think there's a support group somewhere for people like me...

This project will give you a very simple example of using this beautiful paper. I especially like two-sided paper, as it is twice the pleasure and twice the paper-crafting fun!

Tools

Tools needed for this project:

  • Paper trimmer, or scissors and ruler
  • Scissors
  • Simple Card Base & Envelope
  • Adhesive: double-sided tape or glue will work
  • Ribbon
  • Patterned Paper (two-sided paper is great, but two different pieces of one-sided paper will do just fine.)

Trimmer 1

Step 1: cut your patterned paper down to 5 1/2 inches long.

Trimmer 2

Step 2: turn your paper 180 degrees and cut it down to 4 inches wide.

Tear cardstock

Step 3: tear the paper down the shorter side, around 2/3 of the way down. This should leave you with two pieces of paper at 4 inches wide by around 2-3 inches long each.

Tip:It's best to offset the tear so you have one piece that is a little larger than the other.

Torn Cardstock

Now you should have two pieces of paper - each with different patterns on them.

Grab some tape

Step 4: adhere your paper to your card base. Make sure to leave a small amount of the card base showing around the edge.

Adhere Layer

Step 5: Stick down one piece of paper...

And then the other piece of paper...

Add some ribbon

Step 6: Measure out a piece of ribbon the length of your paper, which should be around 4 inches long.

Tie a pretty bow

Step 7: Cut another piece of ribbon, about the same length as the first piece. Tie it in a knot around the first piece of ribbon.

Tape down ribbon

Tip: If you are using double-sided tape to adhere ribbon, cut a piece of tape in half long-ways and use the smaller pieces to stick your ribbon down to the paper.

Ribbon taped down

Step 8: Adhere the ribbon to the cardstock. Trim off any excess ribbon that might be taking away from the effect you are trying to create.

Finished Card

You're done! Send this card to someone who will appreciate it's simple goodness.
